I've always wondered why other people at work get hit on and not me...that is until today. This nice good looking man pulled me to the side today and asked me if I wanted to go out with him. I was so flustered I didn't know how to handle it and I said no. I can't believe how crazy I was! So, if you're out there...come back to the library, I'd like to get to know you better!!!!

Back from Branson!
I had a really great time on my trip to Branson, but I'm glad to be home. It's time for a vacation from my vacation. :)

We packed the trip with tons of stuff and I enjoyed it all, but here is a ranking of what I enjoyed the most.

Shows
1. Shoji Tabuchi - This show was amazing! It was filled with music and dancing and everything was polished and sharp. The production was top notch and very impressive. To top it off, the dancers became impressive drummers. It is definitely worth going to see.
1. Jim Stafford - Yes I have also ranked this as number one. We had seats on the front row and at first we grumbled that all we would see would be his shoes...we couldn't have been more wrong, we had the best seats in the house. Where Shoji was all about production, Jim Stafford was all about intimacy. His dry sense of humor had us rolling on the floor, and he really appreciated it. He would walk in front of us on the floor in front of the stage, and often he would tell jokes right to us. His guitar playing was amazing and it was a real family event. I highly recommend this show as well.
2. Noah the Musical - This show was also spectacular. It was cool to see all the animals and the music was good. The sets were fantastic, the best part was when we were inside the arc. That was so cool!
3. Broadway - This was a good review of Broadway music. The two leads were good and the ensemble put together many great musical numbers. This wasn't as polished as some of the other shows, but it was still quite enjoyable.
4. Dixie Stampede - This was a fun Medieval Times type show told as the Civil War. It was a lot of fun and the food was good. I really enjoyed the story they told leading up to the contest. But, I probably wouldn't go see the show again because it would be the same thing all over again.

Activities
1. Laura Ingalls Wilder's Home - We had to drive an hour and a half to get here, but for me it was worth it. She was my hero when I was a kid and I loved getting a chance to see her homes and all the artifacts from her life. It was cool to see things described in her books such as Pa's fiddle and the plate that she had received when she had gotten married. It was a highlight of my trip.
2. Silver Dollar City - It was an amusement park with the theme of the Ozarks in the 1800s. There were craftsmen, rides, and Bluegrass music and Bar-b-q. I really enjoyed my time there.
3. The Titanic Experience - I almost put this as number two, but since it didn't have bluegrass music it had to move down. This museaum was a fascinating look at the entire Titanic voyage. It was very comprehensive...so comprehensive that if you go be prepared to spend several hours there. To start off the tour, a stewardess gives you a boarding pass wth the name of one of the passengers and you are invested in whether they live or die. There are a great number of artifacts, interactive exhibits, and we were fortunate because an exhibit of the movie was there when we went. It was truly fascinating and I could have stayed for another hour or so.
4. The Talking Rocks Cavern - This was a beautiful cave that we went to see. I thought it was very interesting to see all the beautiful formations and to climb around in the cavern. However, we had to climb at least two hundred steps down into the cave and then climb back up those steps when we were done. My legs were screaming at least two days after we went, and unfortunately my mother was not able to go. It was nice to see and if you don't do this one, take advantage of one of the many other caves available.

We really enjoyed our stay. Our hotel, Springwater Resort was really beautiful and reasonable and we would stay there again. Unfortunately we didn't have much luck in finding good restaurants. That is something that Branson could stand to improve on.

Wow, I've just looked at the date of my last entry and realized that not only have I not posted for a month, but I really haven't been checking out my friends page either.

I think the reason for this is several fold.

Firstly my family and work friends have drug me kicking and screaming into Facebook. I had already had an account there that was going the same way as my Myspace account...collecting dust. That is until my cousin from Arizona contacted me through it. Ever since I have been strangely addicted to what my family and co-workers are like online.

Secondly, I have found myself falling in love all over again with an old interest of mine from 20 years ago....The Monkees. I think I will do a post on this seperately, but needless to say, I think if you can look past their bubblegum, manufactured beginnings, you'll find that they are more than just a 60s version of The Jonas Brothers. But, more on that later, an interesting side note to this whole thing is that Michael Nesmith has created this VR world called Videoranch3D that is much like Second Life. I am absolutely loving it because every weekend they stream movies that people comment on a'la Mystery Science Theatre, and I am having a blast!! (More on that later too.)

Finally, I think this is the absolutely main reason for my not being around as much. I am just not that interested in Stargate Atlantis anymore. I find myself skipping over things I used to devour as soon as it was posted. I know that I may regret this in the future, but I think I am going to go ahead and defriend people and communities that I keep just because of the SGA connection. There is nothing personal in this decision, I just think it's time to lighten up my LJ and see if it is worth keeping around right now. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of you on line and in person and perhaps we will be able to reconnect in the future.

So, I'll be seeing some of you around and hopefully you won't be getting completly bored with my new interests. If you decide to defriend me I completely understand. :)

A Different Kind of Meme

Five.

Borrowed from sallymn... Comment on this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given..

This is a different kind of meme and it sounds really interesting. I got some prompts from sallymn and here are my answers.

Life on Mars - I fell in love with the BBC version of this show mainly because the chemistry between Philip Glenister and John Simms. And it made me fall in love with 70s music all over again. So, despite all the negative response from the diehard Life on Mars fans, I decided to give the American show a chance. I liked some things about it, but there were too many things that left me indifferent. Their answer to recreating the chemistry between the two main stars, my main draw to the show, was to not even try to have it. So, if the show gets cancelled, it won't bother me.

Westerns - I have loved tv westerns since I was a little kid and it has not stopped to this day. Weirdly that hasn't transfered to the movies as much, but put a western on tv and I will subscibe to that channel (I'm talking about you HBO!). Here is a list of the westerns I remember watching in my lifetime with the ones I loved highlighted (and yes I got the older ones from repeats..don't make me that old! LOL!): The Rifleman, Bonanza, The Big Valley, Alias Smith and Jones, Here Come the Brides, The Campbells, Little House on the Prairie, Paradise, Young Riders, Snowey River: the MacGregor Saga, Legend, Magnificent Seven (I'm still in this fandom), Peacemakers, and Deadwood.

Theatre - This is an interesting one because I don't think I talk about it all that much. My dad was in the 7th corps road show in Germany when I was born and my fate was sealed, I've been doing theatre ever since. The shows that stick in my memory the most are 1776 (behind the scenes because I was still a kid), A Midsummers Night Dream (my first on stage show with the big theatre), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (my high school senior year production), and You're a Good Man Charlie Brown (I loved playing Snoopy). Sadly my life has led me away from theatre, but I still love seeing plays. In fact Friday I saw Smoke on the Mountain because we are going to do it next year at church!

Cons - Oh goodness, what can I say about cons? I love cons! Now that I've been to a few I can say it's not as much about seeing the actors, although that's still a big draw, but it's also about seeing friends and going to places I've never been before. Who knows where they will take me in the future...maybe Australia? Wouldn't that be a fun trip!

Embroidery - The type of stitching I do is called cross stitch and it is so much fun. When I became an adult everywhere I looked people were doing cross stitch and I decided to jump into the fray. Over the years I have perfected my style and have done more and more elaborate pictures. My favorite artist is Theresa Wentzler and I just spent 2 years completing her Peacock Tapestry. I hope this year I'll be able to enter it into the State Fair of Texas.

Pay it Forward Meme

I got this from 2of7

The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me! My choice. For you.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year.
- You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be a story. It may be poetry. I may draw or paint something. I may bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well. We all can make stuff!
Keys to the Castle

Just watched yummy John Barrowman in Keys to the Castle. I do wonder about his casual clothes while touring French castles.

They had a beautiful castle that would be perfect to stay in whenever I visited France. Take a look at Chateau de Tennessus. It's only $90 a night!!

2nd book - 48 to go
I have just completed the 2nd book in my 50 book challenge, Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell.

Let me start off by giving you a little of my Shakespeare history. When I was a kid I grew up in a pretty theatrical house, we were all involved in the community theatre and every year we would do a Shakespeare play along with all of the other repertoire you typically find in community theatre. On top of that, I loved watching PBS whenever they would run a theatrical portrayal of Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing (not the Kenneth Branagh version) particularly stands out. So, for some reason I got it in my head that I could "read" Shakespeare and understand it.

Fast forward to my final year in college and I had to take one more lit class. I was reluctant to take Shakespeare because that was so stereotypical and I really didn't think it would benefit my career such as taking a class on children's lit or YA lit would. Not to mention I looked back on my "understanding" of Shakespeare as I child and it made me cringe as to how pretentious I was. Unfortunately, the classes I wanted to take were filled with teachers and I had no choice but to take the Shakespeare class. Much to my surprise, I absolutely loved it. It was a lot of hard work, but I absolutely thrived in the discussions we had about his plays and sonnets. I did not leave the class thinking I was anywhere near a Shakespeare scholar, but I did get a renewed appreciation for his works. In fact my volume of Shakespeare that I bought for the class is the only textbook I ever wanted to keep from my college years, and it has a special place in my bookcase now.

That brings me to Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell. The story intrigued me as soon as I heard about it. Here is a description from Amazon.com:

...Kate finds the first piece in a Shakespearean puzzle, setting her on a deadly, highstakes treasure hunt. From London to Harvard to the American West, Kate races to evade a killer and solve a tantalizing string of clues hidden in the words of Shakespeare, which may unlock one of history’s greatest secrets.

The promise of a "Shakespearean puzzle" completely sold me and I immediately wanted to read it and talk about it in book club.

So, you've heard of The Da Vinci Code? Well, I call this the Shakespeare code. It really follows the suspenseful pattern of uncovering historical facts while racing around keeping one step ahead of a killer who is on the same trail. Unfortunately, the book didn't quite live up to my expectations. First, I felt that I didn't have enough knowledge of the subject to quite understand the facts that were being revealed. The book had very thrilling components, but then would drag as the heroine would find a clue. It was a lot of hurry up and wait. In addition to that there would be "interludes" set in Shakespeare's time that would try to advance the mystery that we were investigating. However, I never really understood who the characters were and what was going on and I felt they were a wasted opportunity.

I didn't hate the book, I just feel sort of indifferent about it. I'm afraid that if I wouldn't have been reading it for book club I probably would have abandoned it. But, if you like Shakespeare you might have a different perspective of the book, so I don't want to discourage you from trying it out.

So, next I'm going back to Young Adult and I will be reading the Runaway graphic novels from Marvel.

50 Books in a Year - 49 to go

Sounds easy?....hard? Honestly, I don't know. But I'm going to find out. Thanks to fanofscifi who has pointed me to 50bookchallenge I am going to follow one of my resolutions of reading more books. I have hopes that I will take this as seriously as I did the November blog a day challenge. While I didn't technically blog each day, I did the best I possibly could.

Now, as for the books, I have actually finished my first book. Granted, I started the book last year, but I finished it today. :) I was looking around for books to put on my recommended reading shelf and was quite surprised to see the next book in Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series titled Superior Saturday. I've been reading this series for a while until I caught up with the author, so it was great to find the next book.

I have to admit that this book disapointed me. All of the previous books did have an over hanging arc that started with the first book and will end with the final book. But, each book had a story arc that started and ended in each book. But, not so with this book. Superior Saturday depended entirely too much on what happened in the previous books while seeming to just be around to set up the final book. All of Mr. Nix's books have had a distinct world that the main character has had to navigate and learn all the while setting up the final battle of the book. Unfortunately Saturday only spends a couple of chapters in the new world and there really wasn't a final battle. In fact Lord Arthur and Superior Saturday are only together for two pages and they don't even fight each other. Like I said, I was disapointed, but I will read the final book because I've already invested too much time to give up now.

Now for the next book. I will be reading Interred with Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell. It is about how a Shakespeare scholar is given his missing manuscript. Soon her mentor dies like Hamlet's father and she discovers clues in Shakespeare's words that unlock one of histories greatest secrets.

New Years Resolutions

It's that time of the year again, New Years Resolutions!

Every year experts come up with a way to make New Years Resolutions easier to keep. Don't call them resolutions, etc. This year is no different, I just printed 52 easy ways to lose weight in '09 www.att.net/s/editorial.dll where "one lifestyle tweak a week can add up to a big difference." Of course this is a "simple" solution to weight loss that can be considered ridiculous, but I'm going to try it and see what happens. However, that is not my resolution. My resolution is actually going to be more extensive than that.

So, here goes.

1. Contact Consumer Credit Counseling Services to come up with a financial plan to help reduce my debt. - This is something I have to do before I can consider going on any more trips in the future.

2. Read more books. - I know this is something I've said before, but this is actually work related. I need to be able to do reader's advisory and collection development for the YA department at my branch. To do this, I need to know what books are out there. This is going to be particularly challenging to me, not because I don't read, but because I watch a lot of tv and read a lot of fan fiction. But, this might be easier this year because SGA is ending and I don't think I'll be as interested in the fanfic once the original source is gone. I need this resolution to stick because I don't think I am being all that I can be at work.

3. Become more health concious. - This last year I have watched my parents make a complete lifestyle change and they have lost about 60 pounds each. I am so proud of them, and I have been feeling like I should do something myself. Of course this is the resolution everyone makes...and breaks, myself included. But, I am also inspired because of another thing. My work offers a point system for health related items. I just watched several of my co-workers earn $250 each for the points they earned last year. So, I plan to sign up for the points, sign up for Weight Watchers, do more walking, and follow the 52 week article mentioned above.

4. Clean out my garage. - My garage really isn't that bad, I can still get my car in, but I should get some of the boxes emptied. If nothing else, I need to get rid of all the cardboard boxes that seem to be growing in the garage.

5. Get rid of all plastic grocery bags. - I am absolutely choking in plastic grocery bags...and I don't need to be! I've got the canvas bags, and I love them! But, I can't seem to ever remember to bring them into the store, so I come back with plastic bags. But, no more!! From now on, whenever we go to the grocery store we will take 2 bags full of plastic bags to recycle until they are all gone!
